The Macallan has revealed The Reach, an exceptional 81-year-old single malt whisky made during World War II. Crafted from a single oak cask seasoned with sherry, The Reach stands as the oldest whisky ever released by The Macallan. This outstanding single malt embodies a significant moment in history and embodies the enduring essence that has defined The Macallan for nearly two centuries. The Reach showcases The Macallan’s unwavering dedication to excellence since its establishment in 1824.
This rich and rare whisky is presented in a stunning decanter made from hand-blown hot glass, placed on a bronze sculpture of three hands. Each hand symbolizes key figures in The Macallan’s past. One hand pays tribute to the distillery workers of 1940 who originally crafted the spirit over eight decades ago. Another hand represents Allan Shiach, a former chairman whose grandfather oversaw the company when this extraordinary spirit was first aged in its cask. The third hand belongs to the current Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell, who meticulously chose the 1940 cask for creating The Reach.
Campbell expressed her pride in introducing The Reach, emphasizing the whisky’s connection to a challenging period in history and highlighting The Macallan’s legacy of innovation and resilience. The collaboration involved in creating The Reach pays homage to the people behind this precious whisky and their unyielding spirit.
Renowned sculptor Saskia Robinson meticulously crafted the three-hand sculpture, capturing intricate details like veins, nails, and skin texture in the bronze casting. The brilliance of the metal contrasts elegantly with the dark amber hue of the whisky. The glass decanter’s surface bears subtle impressions matching the fingerprints of the supporting bronze hands. The decanter is elegantly housed in a wooden cabinet made from a fallen elm tree believed to have been on The Macallan Estate in 1940.
The whisky, with its deep auburn color, offers a glimpse of its remarkable depth. Its flavor profile includes hints of dark chocolate, sweet cinnamon, peaty aromas, treacle toffee, crystallized ginger, and charred pineapple, culminating in a rich, sweet, and smoky finish.
Limited to only 288 decanters worldwide, each priced at $125,000, The Reach stands as a testament to The Macallan’s heritage and commitment to producing exceptional spirits.
