# The 1980 Renault 5 Turbo Group 4 from RM Sotheby’s Is An Impressive Machine
We have seen quite a few rally cars available for purchase on The Status Life, but this 1980 Renault 5 Turbo Group 4 from RM Sotheby’s stands out as a visually striking and high-performing machine. However, be prepared to dig deep into your pockets as it comes with a price tag of €350k-450k, making it quite a valuable addition to any car collection in 2022.
The 1980 Renault 5 Turbo Group 4 from RM Sotheby’s holds a special place in history as the first Renault 5 Turbo to be homologated for Group 4 racing. It is also the only surviving ex-Works, Calberson-liveried Renault 5 Group 4, as confirmed by marque historian Gilles Vallerian, which explains its lofty price. This car, driven by Jean Ragnotti and Jean-Marc Andrié in the 1980 Tour de France Automobile and Tour de Corse, graced the cover of the 1980/1981 L’Année Echappement, a renowned French motorsport annual.
## MIGHTY IMPRESSIVE MACHINE
Crafted by Renault at its Formula 1 department in Antony, France, alongside Alain Prost’s single-seater race car, chassis number “B0000036” is a unique non-F1 creation from this esteemed facility. Unlike other Renault cars assembled elsewhere, this particular 5 Turbo has a distinct origin. Following its competitive days, it remained in the possession of the factory until its sale at Chateau de Fontainebleau on 25 April 1989.
Subsequently, the 1980 Renault 5 Turbo Group 4 came under the ownership of Jean Sage, the former sporting director of Renault Sport, from 1977 to 1985. The fact that the boss himself chose to own one of the cars he once supervised is a testament to its significance. Over the years, it changed hands and was meticulously maintained, with maintenance records totaling over €50,000 from 2003 to 2016. Acquired by the current owner in 2014, it was displayed at the prestigious Chantilly Arts & Elegance concours in 2016.
This striking Renault 5 Turbo offers a rare chance to own an ex-Works Renault Sport vehicle driven by the legendary Jean Ragnotti in iconic French rallies. Remarkably, it retains its original paint, stickers, engine, gearbox, and components. Apart from being a pivotal part of Renault’s rally legacy, this 5 Turbo from RM Sotheby’s is primed for historic motorsport events under its new owner.
