The more I travel, the deeper my desire grows to be surrounded by nature. Whether navigating through a canyon, wandering in a jungle, or exploring a forest, the notion of “biophilia” seems to resonate with fellow travelers as well. While well-trodden destinations like US national parks, Patagonia, and Easter Island are celebrated for their stunning natural landscapes, there are still some less-known treasures waiting to be explored.

Cappadocia, a charming region in Turkey famed for its hot air balloons that take flight at dawn, is one such hidden treasure. Beyond the iconic balloons, Cappadocia boasts breathtaking hikes, the Goreme Open-Air Museum (designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site), a lively culinary scene, and remarkable natural formations such as the Fairy Chimneys and rose-hued canyons.

After spending countless hours trekking each day, I had the joy of staying at the Museum Hotel, a Relais & Chateaux property intricately designed within ancient caves in Uçhisar. This hotel feels like a living gallery, showcasing a collection of artifacts curated by its owner, Ömer Tosun, and featuring peacocks and turtles roaming the grounds. Watching the hot air balloons float gracefully over the valleys from the hotel’s pool was nothing short of enchanting.

The restaurant, Lil’a, managed by Executive Chef Saygin Sesli, provides an outstanding dining experience influenced by the flavors of Anatolia. Chef Sesli’s heartfelt dishes embody his commitment to preserving traditional culinary techniques and tastes. Enjoying a meal at Lil’a after a day of hiking was truly a delight.

Despite the influx of balloon rides and tourist buses, Cappadocia’s incredible natural beauty is essential for any outdoor enthusiast to experience. I reveled in daily hikes originating from the Museum Hotel, discovering trails like Love Valley and Rose Valley, filled with their distinctive rock formations and historical landmarks. The property even features a venue on Love Hill overlooking the valley, further enhancing the charm of the stay.

I eagerly anticipate returning to Cappadocia and the Museum Hotel to once again savor the captivating beauty of this hidden gem.
