Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas, the first new-build Alila resort by Hyatt in the Americas, opened its doors on March 17, 2021. Nestled along the coastal bluffs of San Diego, this luxury resort offers a unique and personalized experience in a stunning beachfront setting, embodying the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of the vibrant surf and beach culture of the area. With 16 locations worldwide, Alila Marea Beach Resort brings sustainable tourism practices, innovative eco-design, and intimate destination experiences to Southern California.
The 130-room Alila Marea Beach Resort feature an oceanfront pool, four dining options, the tranquil Spa Alila, spacious indoor-outdoor event spaces, and locally inspired activities. The resort, named after the Italian and Spanish word for “tide,” “Marea,” captures the essence of Southern California with its natural landscapes and close affinity to the Pacific Ocean and the energetic surf and beach lifestyle.

Alila Marea Beach Resort joins Alila Napa Valley and Ventana Big Sur as the third Alila property in the U.S. and California. The project, developed by JMI Realty and Fenway Capital Advisors, aimed to create a special place that resonates with guests and neighbors in the San Diego community, according to John Kratzer, CEO of JMI Realty. Larry Jackel, Managing Partner at Fenway Capital Advisors, expressed the hope that Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas will set a new standard for luxury hospitality.
The resort offers 130 luxurious guest accommodations, including spacious guestrooms, studio rooms, suites, and presidential suites, all featuring breathtaking coastal or garden views. Each room boasts unique interiors with a focus on natural elements, most with a balcony or patio – some even with a private fire pit.
Executive Chef Claudette Zepeda curates sustainable menus using locally sourced ingredients at VAGA Restaurant & Bar, the resort’s premier dining venue overlooking the ocean bluffs. The Coffee Box offers quick refreshments, while The Pocket provides a high-end pool deck experience with a menu featuring tacos, sushi, and craft cocktails.
Spa Alila offers five treatment rooms, saunas, and a relaxation space, all inspired by the healing properties of the ocean. Guests can indulge in holistic treatments and signature therapies for complete relaxation. Complementing the wellness experience, the resort provides daily fitness facilities, beachfront yoga classes, group runs along the coast, nature hikes, and more at no extra cost.
Guests can participate in immersive local experiences through partnerships with Encinitas-based companies such as Electra Bicycle Company, providing electric-assist cruisers for guests, and Surfin Fire, offering surf lessons for all skill levels. Additional amenities include a Surfboard Butler, beach services, nightly sunset rituals, and exclusive experiences at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.
