Nestled in the center of Cambridge, New Zealand, Alpino restaurant is situated within a striking rose-brick structure that formerly served as the town’s primary post office. Run by Noel Cimadom, who hails from northeastern Italy, along with his Kiwi spouse, Kim, this establishment specializes in classic Italian cuisine amidst a spacious dining area that features vintage decor, including clerk wall lamps from its post office origins dating back to 1908.
Guests at Alpino can enjoy meals either outdoors on the sidewalk or inside the vibrant, casual ambiance at polished wooden tables. The menu, crafted by Chef Branislav Petkovic from Serbia, presents a wide array of options, featuring oysters, prawns, calamari, along with various pastas and pizzas.
During our experience, we kicked things off with a refreshing limoncello margarita and a martini corretto. For starters, we chose garlic bread pizza topped with parmesan and talatta anchovies served on charred ciabatta. For our main courses, we delightfully sampled homemade spaghetti featuring slow-roasted duck and seafood ravioli dressed with almond butter. To complement our meal, we selected a dry rosé from Tuscany.
Cambridge itself is a picturesque town in the North Island, recognized for its tree-lined streets, historic buildings, antique shops, and its close proximity to attractions such as the Hobbiton movie set. The combination of exceptional cuisine, a warm atmosphere, and a fascinating locale makes Alpino an essential dining destination.
