Exploring Exquisite Luxury at RdV Vineyards in Delaplane, Virginia

When you discover RdV Vineyards in Delaplane, Virginia, it’s interesting to learn about their goal to establish the first American Cru. For wine lovers, RdV may have already accomplished this. The winery’s striking structure featuring a bright white silo stands out as you arrive, reminiscent of a local farm.

Owned and managed by Rutger de Vink, the aspiration to elevate American wine to new heights is becoming a reality. With Rutger’s background as a U.S. Marine and his determination, the objective of producing the finest red wine in America is coming to fruition.

Rutger’s wine journey began after his military tenure. He studied at Colgate University and Kellogg for his MBA. Following a brief period at a venture capital firm in Washington DC, Rutger realized that the corporate world was not his calling. He pursued his dream of working in a vineyard and being outdoors.

To gain insight into winemaking, Rutger worked at different wineries in the U.S. and Europe, notably at Linden Vineyards where he crossed paths with Jim Law, a notable figure in Virginia’s wine industry. It was at Linden’s neighboring cattle farm where Rutger saw the potential for grape cultivation. He purchased the land, planted vines in 2006, and constructed a modern winemaking facility in 2011.

RdV debuted with the launch of their initial 2008 Lost Mountain bottles priced at $88 each, demonstrating their commitment to excellence. Winemaker Josh Grainer, a crucial figure in bringing the American Cru vision to life, has played a pivotal role in RdV’s triumph.

Hospitality Director Karl Kuhn, previously employed at a Michelin-starred restaurant, enriches the top-tier team at RdV. RdV’s wine club, referred to as “Ambassadors,” helps promote the winery and relish exclusive access to limited releases, making them esteemed members of the RdV community.

For those keen on exploring RdV, tasting reservations can be scheduled online. RdV primarily caters to wine club members, underscoring their emphasis on quality and exclusivity.

A lavish sojourn in the vicinity could entail lodging at Salamander Resort and Spa in Middleburg or a cozy retreat at the Red Fox Inn, renowned for its delightful suites and cottages. RdV Vineyards stands out as a symbol of excellence in American winemaking, with a commitment to producing exceptional wines.
