There is a common misconception that going on an African safari involves roughing it in tents in the wilderness. However, my recent visit to Arathusa Safari Lodge located in the Sabi Sand Reserve area of Kruger National Park proves otherwise. This small, exclusive lodge offers a blend of luxury amenities and the beauty of its natural surroundings, enhanced by the warm and welcoming staff committed to ensuring every guest has a memorable stay.
Arathusa Lodge features 12 individual villas, each boasting modern and spacious interiors flooded with natural light. The rooms have an open layout, including comfortable beds with mosquito netting for decoration, a cozy seating area, coffee bar, mini fridge, and a stylish bathroom with soaking tubs. A private outdoor patio provides a perfect spot to relax with a glass of South African wine at the end of the day. Guests are encouraged to disconnect from daily distractions, as there are no TVs or in-room wifi (available in common areas).
Eight villas overlook a watering hole frequented by local wildlife, offering a front-row seat to observe elephants splashing around or catch a glimpse of rhinos. The remaining four villas are more secluded and may require an escort due to free-roaming animals in the vicinity.
The lodge’s communal spaces include cozy sitting areas, a well-stocked wine room showcasing South African wines, and a welcoming bar. With a capacity for only 24 guests, you’ll have the opportunity to mingle with fellow travelers and share stories of your thrilling game drives.
Dining at Arathusa is a communal affair, set outdoors by the watering hole. You’ll dine with other members of your safari group, often accompanied by your guide for insight into the wildlife. The meals are exquisite and cater to various dietary requirements.
To maximize your safari experience, the lodge offers a daily schedule consisting of early morning and late afternoon game drives, each lasting three to four hours. The drives are filled with excitement as you track and spot animals, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and spotter. You’ll have opportunities for coffee breaks and light snacks during the morning drive and happy hour during the afternoon outing. Our first afternoon drive yielded sightings of three of the Big 5.
For relaxation, the lodge features a compact spa offering customized treatments. A mid-morning massage is an ideal escape from the early wake-up calls, while an evening foot massage is perfect for unwinding.
The lodge staff, mostly from the local village, are exceptionally hospitable and attentive. Their aim is to ensure all guests have a fantastic stay, catering to requests for local insights or a nightcap before bed. A gift shop on-site offers locally crafted souvenirs and essentials.
Arathusa Lodge is a scenic two to three-hour drive from Hoedspruit airport, though many guests opt for a direct flight to the lodge’s airstrip, making it an ideal destination for an authentic South African safari experience.
