The Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet itself conjures up visions of sunlit shores, effortless elegance, and the pinnacle of automotive history. More than just a vehicle, it is a mobile masterpiece, showcasing the artistry of handcrafted engineering and classic design. This particular model, coated in an eye-catching Silver Grey Metallic, stands out as a remarkable example of this automotive icon.
Manufactured from 1969 to 1971, the 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet signifies the apex of the W111 series. With fewer than 1,400 produced, it is a scarce and highly sought-after vehicle, representing automotive prowess that continues to enthrall collectors and aficionados around the globe. Its graceful contours, complemented by chrome detailing, an imposing upright grille, and the hallmark twin round headlights, all contribute to its unmistakably elegant and distinctly European aura. The convertible roof, which folds away effortlessly, enhances the car’s iconic silhouette, making it the ultimate vehicle for open-air enjoyment.
Underneath the impeccably shaped hood lies Mercedes-Benz’s inaugural production V8 engine, a 3.5-litre wonder that generates 200 horsepower and 211 lb-ft of torque. This powerful yet refined engine, paired with a smooth 4-speed automatic transmission, creates an exhilarating driving experience, combining effortless power with the charm of classic motoring.
This specific 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet comes with an impressive pedigree. Originally painted in Silver Grey Metallic (option code 180) and assembled in November 1970, it was shipped to the USA, where it was kept under single ownership until 2007. A letter from Mercedes-Benz verifies that its original engine (11698012002705) is still in place, an essential detail for collectors. In 2011, the car moved to Germany, where it was taken under the expert care of renowned restoration specialist Rosier Classic Sterne.
Although it had already undergone restoration, Rosier enhanced the vehicle by removing the American side markers and swapping the miles-based odometer for a kilometer-based unit. In 2012, the car was purchased by a German collector, who valued it until 2022. During this time, in November 2012, the engine received a professional overhaul from Motoren Instandsetzung Oldenburg, ensuring its optimal performance and reliability.
Now showcased in stunning restored condition, this 280SE Cabriolet embodies the timeless craftsmanship synonymous with German engineering. Its exceptional build quality provides a driving experience marked by luxury and serenity, offering unmatched comfort and a feeling of total isolation from the outside world. This Silver Grey masterpiece transcends mere classic car status; it is a slice of automotive heritage, a symbol of open-top sophistication, and a testament to the lasting allure of Mercedes-Benz’s golden age. It is available for viewing by appointment at their Munich showroom and is notably on EU taxes paid status.
