The BMW 507 Roadster. Just hearing the name evokes visions of sunlit coastal roads, effortless elegance, and a nostalgic era of automotive charm. Only 252 units were manufactured between 1956 and 1959, which makes each one a prized collector’s item. Now, an especially sought-after Series II model, rich with an intriguing backstory, is set to go up for auction through RM Sotheby’s, presenting a rare chance to possess an authentic piece of automotive heritage.
The development of the 507 was significantly shaped by the insights of New York importer Max Hoffman, the same visionary who promoted the Porsche 356 Speedster and Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. Recognizing the American market’s demand for a more accessible sports car, he inspired BMW to create a rival to Mercedes-Benz’s offerings. The result, designed by the talented Count Albrecht Goertz, was simply stunning. Equipped with a 3.2-litre alloy V-8 engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission, the 507 quickly became a standout, arguably the most stunning design to bear the BMW roundel. Its limited production was, reportedly, due to BMW incurring losses on each unit sold, which added to its allure.
This specific model, chassis 70136, rolled off the production line on 5 May 1958, categorizing it as a sought-after Series II version. This update included enhancements to the cabin and luggage space, boosting the car’s practicality. Initially painted in Altelfenbein (old ivory), this 507 showcases a remarkable international journey. It was first showcased at the BMW Pavillon in Munich before being shipped to Havana, Cuba, on 7 June 1958.
After a somewhat mysterious period, the car emerged in Germany during the mid-1980s and was acquired by its current owner in 1988. Shortly thereafter, an extensive restoration took place over a span of six years. The mechanical work was executed by the reputable Munich-based specialists, Brummer, while the bodywork was meticulously restored by Hagl in Attenkirchen, Bavaria. The owner’s commitment to preserving this automotive gem is evident in the significant investment made in the restoration process.
Today, this 507 Roadster is showcased in a striking black hue, accentuated by matching centre-lock Rudge wheels and a retractable soft-top. The interior is tastefully adorned in grey upholstery. Crucially, the vehicle retains its matching-numbers engine (stamped 40147) and is accompanied by a rare colour-matched hard-top, a spare fuel tank, and the original owner’s manuals.
With prominent past owners like Elvis Presley, John Surtees, Bernie Ecclestone, and Ursula Andress, the BMW 507 Roadster has undoubtedly earned its status as one of the most glamorous and sought-after automobiles ever made. This particular model, available after 36 years of meticulous ownership, offers a truly exceptional chance to own a piece of automotive history.
