The Octantis: A New Standard For Purpose-Built Expedition Ships

Viking has raised the bar for purpose-built expedition ships with the launch of the impressive Viking Octantis. This cutting-edge vessel is designed to offer unparalleled comfort and style for adventurers looking to explore the farthest reaches of the earth. Equipped with state-of-the-art nautical technology, academic labs, and libraries, the Viking Octantis provides guests with a rich and luxurious experience like no other.

The ship, steeped in Norwegian heritage and meticulous attention to detail, features sheltered outdoor observation areas spanning from the bow to the stern and a top-of-the-line stabilizing system. These elements ensure that guests can explore the most remote parts of the world in absolute comfort.

Karine Hagen, Executive Vice President of Viking, expressed the hope that guests would feel right at home onboard these elegant vessels. The ship includes familiar spaces found on Viking’s ocean ships, such as the Explorers’ Lounge and Mamsen’s, as well as innovative new areas like The Aula and The Hangar, which are unique to the travel industry.

The Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, both Polar Class ships, can accommodate 378 guests in 189 staterooms. With more indoor and outdoor viewing areas than other expedition vessels, guests are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery.

Among the ship’s standout features is The Aula, a stunning panoramic auditorium inspired by the University of Oslo’s ceremonial hall. This multi-purpose space hosts lectures, briefings, and screenings with the help of a 4k laser-projected screen and floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views.

The outdoor Finse Terrace provides a scenic lounge area above sea level, complete with heated seating and fire pits, paying tribute to the historic Finse Plateau in Norway, where legendary polar explorers trained for their expeditions.

The ship’s marina, The Hangar, is a groundbreaking feature that allows for easy embarkation and disembarkation of Special Operations Boats and equipment while shielded from the elements. The Bow doubles as a forward-viewing platform and shelter during inclement weather.

For science enthusiasts, the Science Lab offers supervised access to wet and dry laboratory facilities for interactive learning and research activities in collaboration with top institutions.

Additionally, the ship boasts multiple dining venues, such as The Restaurant, World Café, Mamsen’s, and Manfredi’s, offering a variety of culinary delights to suit every palate.

Guests can also indulge in the Nordic Spa, which features traditional Nordic treatments, an indoor heated pool, and an open-air hot tub. The Explorers’ Lounge and Living Room provide cozy spaces for guests to relax, socialize, and take in the stunning views.

Unique to Viking’s expedition ships is the Nordic Balcony featured in all staterooms, providing an indoor sunroom that can be converted into an outdoor viewing platform. With various stateroom categories available, guests can enjoy luxurious amenities and spacious accommodations tailored to their preferences.

The Viking Octantis is well-equipped to tackle extreme weather conditions with its state-of-the-art stabilizing system and ample outdoor observation areas. Recently, the Octantis and another Viking vessel, the Viking Venus, achieved a remarkable feat by crossing the Antarctic and Arctic Circles, respectively.

Designed by a team renowned for their work on Viking’s previous award-winning ships, the Viking Octantis embodies excellence in maritime design and innovation. The ship’s impeccable design has earned accolades, including the “Design Studio Team of the Year” award, highlighting the expertise and creativity behind this remarkable expedition vessel.
