It’s not often you see a car with a price tag in excess of $3m but that’s the situation we’re in right now with this, frankly breathtaking, 1988 Porsche 959SC Reimagined by Canepa that is going under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s Miami auction. With a guide price between $3-3.5M, you’re going to need especially deep pockets to be the lucky bidder when the hammer goes down on this comprehensive and significant upgrade upon Porsche’s 959 supercar.
The 1988 Porsche 959SC Reimagined by Canepa from RM Sotheby’s is the third example tailor-made by the legendary Porsche specialist, Canepa Motorsports. This goes a long way to explaining the lofty asking price. It is finished in paint-to-sample Emerald Green over Dark Green leather and powered by a re-engineered 825-hp, 2.85-litre, twin-turbocharged flat six-cylinder engine.
Bruce Canepa is without a doubt among the world’s most iconic Porsche specialists. His company’s familiarity with the 959 is unmatched within North America, and he was personally fortunate to be one of those lucky enough to have experienced a Porsche 959 in 1987. Hearing of his skills, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen purchased a 959 from Canepa in 1987; shortly thereafter, having experienced Allen’s car, Bill Gates acquired one via Canepa as well.
This 1988 Porsche 959 started its life as one of the first 207 “Komfort” models produced. Originally finished in Silver Metallic over standard grey leather, it was delivered new to Monte Carlo. Having subsequently been sold to Japan and displayed in a private museum in Tokyo, it remained there until it was imported to the United States in September 2016. Got $3m going spare?
