This is a late production ‘SS’ that’s been carefully restored to its former glory and it is flamboyant 70s Italian styling at its very best so, if you like what you see, make sure you don’t miss out on this auction.
The 1981 Maserati Merak SS from Silverstone Auctions is an original, UK-supplied, RHD ‘SS’ and it is 1 of only 300 made so you’ll be in an incredibly exclusive company if you’re a lucky car enthusiast that ends up adding this majestic looking machine to their collection. As an ‘SS’, it benefits from the more powerful version of the 3.0 V6 engine on triple Webers which is capable of producing 220bhp up from the standard car’s 190bhp and a revised interior including the Bora dashboard.
Stunning Piece of Automotive Design
Gloriously retro, we’re loving this 1981 Maserati Merak SS here at The Status Life and we’re in little doubt that it will promote plenty of bidding when it goes under the hammer with Silverstone Auctions. It has been classically finished in Rosso Maserati over Nero (Black) Leather with Rosso horizontal inserts that give it a mighty classy disposition that will turn heads everywhere you go. It has undergone a huge restoration in the 90s which included a full strip-down and bare metal repaint that means it looks as good as new – if not even better.
Arguably the most elegant, not to mention usable, of the ‘70s crop of Italian supercars, Maserati’s breathtaking mid-engined Merak combined a powerful V6 engine with the practicality of occasional rear seats and a good-sized boot. It shares its basic design architecture and floorplan with the V8-powered Bora and the Merak was similarly penned by the talented Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Ital Design studio in Turin, but instead of the Bora’s rear clamshell, there was a flat decklid and novel flying buttress arrangement.
Undoubtedly an excellent investment opportunity, the Merak SS is certainly the most collectible of the Maserati variants and one that is likely to mature over time. Maserati Boras, in good condition, are virtually three times the estimate on this SS, which offers great drivability without the heavy controls of its bigger brother. It’s certainly a Grand Tourer with a rather luxurious interior with ‘plus two’ seating and usable luggage space to boot. After an 80s classic for your car collection? Look no further.
